Brownies on steroids…I might be tempted the partake of the anabolic nastiness if it came in the form of a rich brownie, but alas…
I did not name this culinary creation myself. Actually, it comes from the Andon-Reid Inn, a darling little B & B in North Carolina. This happens to be their most popular and most requested recipe. After baking up some Brownies on Steroids myself, I completely understand why.
Coconut, toffee, chocolate, toasted pecans…it’s got flavor, texture and so much chocolatey goodness! Who could ask for anything more in a brownie-type bar?
I was curious to see how the crust would come together. After following the directions it seemed way to dry, but I kept the original components of the recipe in tact. After pressing all those crumbs down very firmly (no steroids needed for that) I faithfully put the pan in the oven. It baked perfectly. So, when you make these yourself, don’t be surprised if your crust seems too crumbly.
I love a recipe that is quick, delicious and a crowd pleaser. It’s always nice to have plenty like that in my recipe collection. My coworkers would tell you this was a definite success. I have to agree!
Brownies On Steroids
adapted from the Andon-Reid Inn
3/4 cup confectioners’ sugar
1/3 cup cocoa (I used dutch-process, but either kind will work)
3/4 cup cold butter
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips, divided
1 cup coarsely chopped toasted pecans
1/2 cup coconut
1/3 cup toffee bits
While crust is baking, combine condensed milk and 1 cup of chocolate chips in a medium saucepan. Heat, stirring constantly, until mixture is smooth. Stir in the vanilla.
